Search engine optimisation (SEO)
Titles, descriptions, sitemap and redirects: helping search engines find your site.
Site settings
Open Settings › SEO & Indexation:
- your site’s Default title;
- the Default share image: the image shown when someone shares a page that has no image of its own on a social network;
- Allow indexing by search engines and Allow following links: leave them ticked so you can be found;
- Block AI crawlers: asks the crawlers of AI assistants not to read your site.
Page by page
In the editor, open the SEO tab in the right-hand panel:
- Meta title: the title shown in search results (otherwise, the page’s own title);
- Description: if left empty, the page’s first sentence is used;
- Social sharing: the image, title and description shown when someone shares the page on a social network;
- Indexing: Block indexing for a page that must not appear in search engines;
- URL: the page’s File name and the Canonical URL.
Each product has its own SEO tab, and so does each blog post.
The site address first
Enter the Site URL in Publish: without it, TOWeb cannot generate the sitemap (sitemap.xml) or the blog’s RSS feed. Remember to add a site icon (favicon) too.
Change sites without losing your visitors
Is your new page replacing one from an old site? In the Page tab, paste the old address into Former addresses of this page: visitors and search engines will be redirected. And when you rename a page, TOWeb remembers its old address on its own.
Let the optimiser check
Each time you publish, the Site optimizer on the Publish screen flags what hurts your search ranking: missing or duplicate titles or descriptions, images without alt text, no main heading, broken links, forgotten placeholder text… When a Fix link comes with a finding, it takes you straight to where you can correct it.
The optimiser reviews the pages in the main language. Automatic translations are not reviewed, since you do not need to touch them up; their links, however, are checked in every language.
Several languages
A translated site declares each of its languages to search engines. See Translating your site.
