Use of .htaccess protection

IMPORTANT : The use of .htaccess protection requires your host provider to support such files. Before to use it you need to verify that your host provide is authorizing this service and see if there are any conditions and specific uses on their servers.

Creation of user accounts

You can add several users with their password to protect the access of your web site. By default the topic you protect will use  the "users account" list defined under the "Security" screen of the TOWeb's Settings.
Depending on topic if you want to give different user access you will need to uncheck the option "Apply to all protected topics" and then, from the privacy tab of each topic, you will be able to check or uncheck users depending if he/she is authorized to access it or not.

None of the logins and passwords I enter are working, why ?

If your host providers accepts .htaccess files then check the following points with you host provider :
  • verify if the Unix encryption is required or not and update the password encryption mode accordingly
  • verify if you need to enter any real path of your web space on the host server. Some host provider may require the use of a real path for .htaccess and if it's the case then contact your host provider to determine what's the real path of your web space on the server to enter it in the security settings step of TOWeb. The procedure below can help you to determine the real path name of your web space :

1) create a file with the name "realpath.php" and that contains the following line :
<?  echo realpath("realpath.php");  ?>

2) use a FTP tool such as Filezilla to upload this "realpath.php" script to your web space.

3) the is the address of your website is for instance http://my-web-site.com then enter http://my-web-site.com/realpath.php in the web browser to open run this script that will give you the real path of your web space.
If the result is for example something like :

/home/mikael/www/realpath.php

then you will need to enter :

/home/mikael/www/
