How to setup a search engine for my website ?

Important : The possibility to add and use a search engine inside your website is a feature only available with the Professional and e-Commerce licenses of TOWeb.

Local Search Engines available in TOWeb

There are 2 different search engines in TOWeb to allow your visitors to search for local information into the web pages of your website:
  • the classic text search engine (only available in the Professional and e-Commerce editions of TOWeb) allows you to search one or several words in the texts of your website topic and display results in the manner of a conventional engine (such as Google) with links to pages and sub-links to paragraphs
  • The catalog item search engine (only available in e-Commerce edition of TOWeb//) allows you to search and view as a list of products catalogs into a table result containing the product information (picture, price, reference, description) and with the ability to sort and filter by price

How to add a search engine for your web pages

The search engine consists in displaying a form containing a text field and a button on your website from where any search request will start. This button and its text can be customized and its location in your site can be configured from the button position .... You can decide to place your search engine form in the banner of your website if you activate the header (from the "Theme > Page header & footer" screen), or in a selection of topics, or wherever you want inside a paragraph texte by using the predefined field %TW-SEARCH%.

Local search engine advice

First, your local search engine works uses important information as any other search engines. These are especially the choices of the keywords, titles and subtitles you have defined for any topic of your website. So you need to take time to choose and define all the appropriated keywords of every topic and enter there locally from the "SE optimization" tab of your topics. By doing this they will not only be processed and used by your local search engine but also by any other search engines like for instance Google or Yahoo.
Then, if you want your search engine to automatically process the words of a particular paragraph you will need to add a bookmark name to the title of this paragraph (see the last chapter of this page for more information).

META tags customization in your topics

In addition to the web pages' content, search engines are using some more information called META tags. Most used META tags are: a list of keywords, a description and the title (<title>).
To customize the META tags of each topic, select  your topic and click on the SE Optimization tab (Search Engine Optimizations). If you wish, you can avoid search engines to refer a specific topic by checking this option. Your topic will then be invisible to any search engines, including your the one of your web site (if you use it). For more information see our advice about the search engine Optimizations.

The global settings of the Search Engine

Display the result link in bold
Checking this option displays in bold all the titles of the links found during the search.

Display the information line with score and URL
Checking this option displays an additional information line on the link of the page found during the search. It will show the number of words found, the web page address and a score reflecting the relevance of the search results.

Skip words less than N characters
By default, all the words with two characters or less will be ignored by the search engine. If you wish, you can increase or decrease this number (minimum is zero).

Search form field with N characters
You can modify this value as needed to fix the size of the text in the search form.

Scan protected topics' content and display protected page links
Check this option if you want your protected topics to be scanned by your search engine. Your protected topics will stay protected but some partial content (like titles and descriptions) normally not accessible may be displayed in the results (by default this option is not activated)

Minimize the search database by indexing only the meta tags and titles of the web pages
This option increases the speed of the search by scanning and indexing only the principal information of your topics, but decreases the accuracy of the search.

Enable keywords customization at the paragraph level
Checking this option displays a small button "#" above the text of your paragraphs and this button will give you access to a "Search engine keywords customization" dialog from where you will be able to enter any specific keywords related to this paragraph. By default TOWeb runs in an automatic mode to extract and use the important words of your paragraphs as keywords if these contain a bookmark.

How to add a bookmark to your paragraph

In addition to the META tags of the topics, you may want to add a list of keywords that will be specific to a paragraph. This will allow the search engine to find and display a link that will directly point to this paragraph (and not just to the beginning of the web page). To do this you may use the following methods :

1 ) The automatic mode using bookmarks
If you'd like your search engine to display a direct link to a paragraph, simply add a bookmark inside its title. The bookmark is a name starting and ending with ## characters that must be placed at the beginning of the paragraph's title. For more information about bookmark please following link below :
How to add a bookmark

Important notes:
  • if you have a catalog, all your items will automatically be included the search engine database. Therefore, you do not need to specify any bookmark to your items to have them indexed and used by your website search engine.
  • if your topic is an album or a page the paragraphs it contains will not be included automatically to the search engine database. In this case you will need to manually add a bookmark name into your paragraph titles. And if your paragraph has no title or if you don't use its title, you will still need to add a bookmark with a title to your paragraph to have it considered and displayed in the found results by your search engine.

2 ) Adding a list of keywords to a paragraph
By default the TOWeb's search engine runs in an automatic mode : any paragraph containing a bookmark will be taken in account and all important words contained in this paragraph will automatically be considered as keywords. If you want to use a different mode for one or several paragraphs, your will need to activate the option Enable keywords customization at the paragraph level located in the Search Engine screen of  the Settings. By doing this you will see and have access to a small button "#" located above the text area of your paragraph and  from where you be able to :
  1. keep the automatic mode,
  2. choose not to have any keyword at all for your paragraph,
  3. or enter your own list of keywords for this paragraph

How to exclude the found results of a topic

if you want the local search engine of your website to ignore a particular topic then use the feature accessible from the link named "Modify the directory and index file name of this topic" located at the bottom of each Topic's general tab.
